LUC–280-1.64, I-280 Reconstruction

Project Description

LUC–280-1.64, I-280 Reconstruction

Owner: Ohio Department of Transportation, District 2
Construction Cost: $15,828,000

Reconstruction of 0.53 miles of I-280 urban interstate on the east side of Toledo and Oregon, Ohio as part of the Maumee River Crossing Project. The interstate was widened through the project area from 4 to 6 lanes, with additional work required on connecting ramps and adjacent side roads. Included in the project was the design of a CSX Railroad bridge over I-280 with a temporary railroad run-around and reconstruction of the I-280 bridge over Starr Avenue. Extensive roadway maintenance of traffic plans were designed that allowed the project to be built while maintaining two lanes of traffic in each direction.

Design Details

  • 0.5 miles of mainline pavement (6-lane with median barrier)
  • 0.5 miles of other ramp / street design
  • CSX Railroad Bridge was a steel through girder fracture-critical design with a 53° skew
  • I-280 bridge over Starr Avenue was a single span steel girder superstructure
  • Extensive maintenance of traffic plans for both roadway and railroad construction
  • Design completed under a very aggressive schedule
  • Project administration required detailed coordination with sub-consultants and other consultants designing adjoining sections of I-280 and various other aspects of the corridor (noise walls, lighting, overall traffic control)
